I’m in the middle of The Mind-Gut Connection by Dr. Emeran Mayer; in this easily digestible book, Dr. Mayer explains how the gut functions, and how the enteric nervous system and the central nervous system are deeply engrained with one another. Reading this book has inspired me to take a more focused approach to forming my daily diet; I’ve begun investigating the everyday phytochemicals of nutritious fruits and veggies and how they work in the gut and body. An easy way to start your day off with a great dose of fruits and veggies is to put them into a smoothie!
Today’s smoothie is a simple and delicious blend of antioxidant rich berries and fibrous fruits. It’s easy to throw together, and can be amended to suit your taste and lifestyle.

What you’ll need:
- 1 Dragonfruit
- 5 Blackberries
- 4 Strawberries
- 1/2 cup Applesauce
- 1 tsp fresh ginger or 1/2 tsp dried ginger
- ice to taste (I suggest 5 ice cubes)
Blend it up and voila! a beautiful fruity smoothie full of antioxidants, fiber, and a little boost of ginger’s antiviral and anti-inflammatory abilities.
Consider adding things like greek yogurt, turmeric, coconut milk, chia seeds, and other fruits or veggies for a unique twist on my recipe! Let me know how your smoothie comes out!
